Jake Ambler, seeking escape from a repressive government on Earth, signs up with an Exopreneur—a company that develops trade with alien worlds. But not just any Exopreneur, Jake signs up with the least reputable of them all, the Independent Crusader Force.

Worse still, he's assigned to "Bug Space", an area of the galaxy where the primary sentient beings are insect-like creatures.

His first mission is to the planet Teila, where the Lydians, a matriarchal society of "spider queens" dominate the much smaller male of the species.

Jake's sense of right and wrong are sorely tested and he finds himself in the middle of a game of Lydian power. But is he a player—or a piece?

Will he be able to figure out the Lydian's secret in time?

As the older men try to prove their case, Adam's attention is captivated by Lilla and Mimi, the daughters of the Downs' steward, and repulsed by the weird and wicked Edgar Caswall.

Most mysterious of all is the Lady Arabella March, perpetually clad in white and winding her way through the affairs of others to some unknown purpose.

Freewall

“You’ve come to the freest place on the planet. You might as well enjoy it.”

The words of Father Clemson to Dex, a black marketeer and smuggler who must negotiate his way through the streets—and politics—of Freewall. It's not long before he runs afoul of various gangs and discovers a plot that threatens the city's very existence.

FreeWall is approximately one-mile square from edge to edge, situated in a no-man’s land currently disputed by Canada and the United States. It is the most densely populated city in the world, and in history, with estimates of nearly two million people contained in its walls. The city is sometimes described as “anarchy” or “anarcho-capitalist” or sometimes just as “mere chaos,” with its sprawling construction leading to an average building height of over 60 feet. Little is certain about it, however, since it lacks a central authority to measure crime and growth statistics or even take a census.
